Mansfield Emergency Surgery

We have an emergency surgeon on-staff ready to act

Emergency surgery is necessary when a patient is faced with an acute threat to life, organ, limb, or tissue. There are numerous events and scenarios that can result in the need for emergency surgery, such as a bad car accident, acute disease, complication during another surgical procedure, or a chronic disease that has worsened. Here at Surgical Associates of Mansfield, we always have one surgeon on staff for emergency needs.

When a patient is in need of emergency surgery, it is imperative they receive the care and attention they need in that moment. The skills of an emergency surgeon are very specific and include the ability to take on abdominal, thoracic, vascular, and soft tissue procedures that need to be performed immediately or within a matter of hours. When feasible, our surgeons will perform these surgeries minimally invasive by way of laparoscopy or robotic surgery.

What is an Emergency Surgeon?

Emergency surgeons are highly-trained individuals who have the experience and knowledge to assess a patient and determine the need for surgery at once. They should be able to know when to call in other specialized surgeons and have the decision-making skills to perform life-saving procedures. It is important to note that not all circumstances that result in the need for emergency surgeon are due to trauma. An emergency surgeon must have a deep understanding of the physiology of acute diseases and chronic illnesses, as these are often the patients who are in need of emergency surgery.

Common Examples of Emergency Surgery

As mentioned, there are many different scenarios that may result in the need for emergency surgery. Some of the most common examples of a surgical emergency include:

  • Appendicitis
  • Cholecystitis
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Gastrointestinal perforation
  • Incarcerated or strangulated hernia
  • Perirectal abscess
  • Severe soft tissue infections or abscess
  • Traumatic injuries

Please keep in mind that this list is far from exhaustive and simply a handful of examples of when an emergency surgery may be necessary. Both appendicitis and cholecystitis procedures are performed by single-site robotically or laparoscopically. Prior to starting the surgery, the surgical team will perform a physical assessment and ensure the patient is as stable as possible. In some cases, diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, CT and MRI scans, EKGs, and lab work, may be necessary. If these tests show a clear need for emergency surgery, the on-call surgeon will be consulted and the team will move forward.
