Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery Options:
Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve

If you're morbidly obese and other treatments — including diet, exercise, and medication — haven't worked for you, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery or obesity surgery.

The Methodist Weight Management Program offers several minimally invasive laparoscopic weight-loss surgeries for patients with a BMI of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 with weight-related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, or joint pain. Most patients are candidates for laparoscopic surgery.

Minimally invasive laparoscopic weight-loss surgery options available at the Methodist Weight Management Program, include:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Gastric sleeve
  • Duodenal switch
  • Intragastric balloons (IGB)
  • Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
  • Revision surgeries
  • Robotic Surgical System

Gastric Sleeve

  • Restrictive only
  • Expected weight loss 60-75% of excess weight
  • Removes 80% of stomach
  • Stomach shaped like a banana

Gastric Bypass

  • Restrictive and malabsorptive
  • Expected weight loss 75% of excess weight
  • Bypasses the stomach and part of the intestine
  • Stomach about the size of an egg
  • Dumping syndrome can be an issue

Duodenal Switch

  • Most restrictive and malabsorptive
  • Expected weight loss greater than 75% of excess weight
  • Sleeved shaped stomach and bypasses part of the intestine
