Family Medicine Resident Activities

Recreational Activities for Our Family Medicine Residents

There is no shortage of activity for residents at Methodist Charlton Medical Center, from the hospital league softball team — they currently reign as champions — and soccer to hosting crawfish boils and going to live comedy shows.

Residents have been known to organize teams for volunteer events like fundraising walks and fun runs, and it’s not uncommon for them to get together and hang out at a restaurant with a great outdoor patio. In a city the size of Dallas, there are numerous opportunities to catch major league baseball, basketball, soccer, and football games.

Residents also attend a yearly retreat where they zip-line and climb an alpine tower, and many go on a medical mission trip to Guatemala.

CME

One feature about our program that residents appreciate is the opportunity to participate in continuing medical education (CME). We provide a budget and time off for residents to attend CME events of their choosing. Some have traveled to California, Florida, and even Hawaii!

Where We Live

A unique aspect of working at Methodist Charlton is the variety of places to live — all within a 30-minute drive from the hospital. Many residents like urban apartment living in Uptown just north of Klyde Warren Park in Downtown Dallas, while others enjoy homes in the newly rejuvenated Oak Cliff neighborhood and nearby suburbs.

Things to do in Dallas

When you hear that there is something for everyone in Dallas, it’s true! In addition to watching major sports teams, there are numerous live shows going on at any time, including vocalists and bands, comedians and speakers, Broadway performances and theater, ballet and modern dance, symphony and opera, to name just a few.

With our temperate climate, outdoor events are year-round with food and drinks, dogs, family recreation, hot air balloons, and just about anything else you can imagine. The closest national park is only 10 minutes away from Methodist Charlton, and here you can get away from it all and camp, swim, kayak, boat, and hike. For less secluded action, Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor in Arlington are just 30 minutes away.

Dallas is hard to beat for retail therapy, with shopping centers throughout the city; vintage stores in trendy Bishop Arts, Trinity Groves, Uptown, Deep Ellum, and the Design District; outlet malls in the suburbs; as well as the original flagship Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas.

No matter how busy residents get, there’s always time for great food. Some of the most popular areas for up-and-coming restaurants are Bishop Arts, Trinity Groves, the Design District, Uptown, Downtown, Deep Ellum, Oak Lawn, Knox-Henderson, and Lower Greenville, each with a personality of its own.
